Hello Lion Family!

I'm Kelly Jenerette Shaw, and I'm proud to serve as the principal here at Loris Middle School. I was born and raised in Loris and am a proud alumni of Loris High School. I am a lion through and through and have a vested interest in the success of our students and school. Every time I walk in the building I am reminded of how educators impacted my life. They planted seeds in me that are still blooming.  My purpose is not only to nurture students myself, but to develop a school full of educators who will foster academic excellence, a growth mindset, and a sense of pride in every student that walks through our doors.

I have worked in Horry County Schools for 18 of my 20 years in education. I started my teaching career at Loris High School in 2005 and also served as an assistant principal during the 2021-2022 school year. I taught ELA in the Connect program at ATA for 5 years and was an instructional coach at Green Sea Floyds High School for 2 years. This is my fourth year as principal at Loris Middle School where I also served as assistant principal for 3 years. I obtained an undergraduate degree in ELA and Secondary Education from the College of Charleston. I then earned an M.S. in Youth Development Leadership from Clemson University and an M.Ed. in Educational Leadership from the University of South Carolina.

Loris Middle School is a 6-8 middle school with a tradition of community involvement. Our mission is to close the achievement and opportunity gaps. We strive to prepare students not just for the careers and challenges of today but those that will evolve in our ever-changing society. Our goal is to create a safe and supportive environment. We take responsibility for the success of all students. We believe in fostering relationships with all stakeholders and building community partnerships. Our motto is “There is Power in The Pride” because we understand that our combined efforts are imperative to help our students achieve the accelerated growth needed to be successful in their future endeavors.

This year, our focus is on literacy and organization.  We are using the AVID framework to drive that focus.  AVID is an acronym for Advancement Via Individual Determination. Our goal is to help students become intrinsically motivated with specific goals and steps to achieve those goals. We help students learn about the opportunities that are available to them and provide them with the tools and resources needed to access those opportunities.  We understand that literacy is the foundation of all learning, so we incorporate it into every content area, including Connections. We provide rigorous and engaging academic instruction while also promoting a positive school culture through student and community events.

We invite you to join our PTO,volunteer to mentor students, volunteer to assist in various methods during the school day, and/or attend or volunteer at community events. You can stay connected through the Weekly ROAR Report and our Facebook page. Your voice matters, and we’re here to work together to ensure every student thrives

Thank you for your trust and support. At Loris Middle School, we “Expect the best and accept nothing less.” We look forward to a rewarding and successful school year. Please don’t hesitate to reach out or stop in. You’re always welcome in the den!

Sincerely,

Kelly Jenerette Shaw

Principal
